Nobody Likes You When You're 23

Imagine an art world populated by the young and enthusiastic. More concerned with their growth as artists and the impact they can make than with how to keep up an established image or how to sell your work to collectors for thousands and thousands of dollar. An art world populated by those conscious of our current dilemma and still have a belief in the way things can change. The young have always been agents for change; unfortunately the systems we find ourselves in follow the logic of the idea that nobody likes you when you’re 23. We are not viable or people are excited about us for the sole fact that we can be put in a listicle of “best artists under 25, you won’t believe number 5!” because we won’t be useful until we’re products to be sold. This show wants to meet the artists on their own terms. Nobody Likes You When You’re 23 seeks to showcase a wide range of artists from across the United States (and 1 in Canada), of differing backgrounds, races, gender identities, sexualities, etc. who share one common trait: in the year 2017 they will be 23 at some point. The goal is to show the power of the young artist, their drive, and their talent at a time where we have grown so much yet still have so much further to go. Art shows will always lean towards the more established, wiser, older artist, the economically viable if you will. We reject that and say nobody likes you when you’re 23, we’re aware of that, but just wait and see.
